World Menstrual Health Day: ‘Old Vandals’ Support 1,000 Girls in Ho District

World Menstrual Health day is celebrated on every 28th day of May annually to change the stigma associated with menstruation.

As part of this year’s celebration, an Alumni of Commonwealth Hall (University of Ghana) popularly know as the Old Vandals have taken to the Ho Municipality to donate one thousand sanitary pads to over 20 schools within the area.

Present were Edem Kofi Kpotosu (Volta Regional President of Old Vandals), Thywill Kpe (Regional Director, Department of Gender, Women and Children), Millicent Dakeh (Regional Girl Child Coordinator Ghana Education Service), among a hosts of other old vandals from the region.

The president of the Association pledged his continuous commitment towards Girl Child Education in the Ho Municipality.

“We have tasked ourselves as Old Vandals to give back to society and also educate them to understand that their periods cannot deter them from going to school due to the stigma attached to it”.

He further urged parents to prioritize girl child welfare so as to prevent the opposite sex from taking advantage of them just because these young ones could not afford these pads.

He urged teachers to extend this education to parents and caretakers of school children in order to reduce the stigma associated with menstruation as the pads under distribution would not solve their stigma forever.

“…What we are distributing wouldn’t solve their problems forever and ever but a way of telling them that do not let your menstrual cycle break your education”.

The Old Vandals Association further thanked the teachers for their cooperation, called on other NGOs to support initiatives of such caliber and additionally appealed to government to remove taxes on sanitary pads to ensure affordability.
