Xipe Community honours James Klutse Avedzi, Lydia Alhassan and Others

Four Illustrious natives of Xipe, a farming community in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta region were on Saturday January 1 recognized and honoured by the chiefs and people of the area for the various roles they have played and continue to play towards the development of the Xipe community.

They are the Honourable Member of Parliament (MP) for Ketu North, James Klutse Avedzi, the MP for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency in the Greater Accra region, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, Bennett Avi and S.K. Nanewortor both Chairman and vice chairman respectively of the Xipe Town Development Planning Committee (TDPC).

The four were presented with Citations of Honour signed by Torgbui Hanyra lll, Dufia of Xipe during a colourful ceremony to climax activities marking the “Deviza” (Native festival) celebrated annually by the chiefs and people of the area.

Hon. James Klutse Avedzi in his citation was praised for his support to many young people not only in Xipe but across the length and breadth of the Ketu North Constituency to further their education through his share of the MP’s Common Fund, as well as helping many young people secure employment through his connections.

“You assumed office as MP for Ketu North at a time when Xipe had no basic amenities”. By dint of hard work, you provided the community with potable drinking water, extended electricity to remote villages, improved our road networks, constructed classroom blocks for the JHS and the KG as well as CHPS Compound for the community,” the citation reads in part.

It adds, “Though you had a humble beginning and difficult challenges, you shone through and accomplished great things-on behalf of the people of Xipe, I Torgbui Hanyra lll, bestow on you this honor for being the “Son of the Soil” who made a great difference in the life of the community”.

Hon. Lydia Seyram Alhassan was also hailed for her dedication and support to the community decades before she even entered parliament. Her citation reads in part, “decades ago when Xipe basic school was near collapse, out of the blue you showed up, not to weep with us but to put smiles on our faces-you single-handedly renovated the three-units classroom block and extended it to six-units.”

It adds “you have supported brilliant but needy students with focus on girl-child education, supported the community with streetlights and continue to assist in many other capacities. In recognition of your achievements and commitments to the growth of Xipe, I Torgbui Hanyra lll, bestow on you this honor as our model-lady, may our young girls find their purpose in your aspiration”.

Bennett Avi and S.K Nanewortor were also cited for their leadership and communal spirits which have largely inured to the benefit of the community.

“Deviza” (Native Festival) was instituted and celebrated annually by the chiefs and people of Xipe to bring natives of the area together to raise funds to support developmental projects. This year’s edition was celebrated to raise funds to build a teachers’ bungalow to house newly posted teachers to the area. It was celebrated on the theme: “Improving the Quality of Education; Our role as a Community”.
