Don King Memorial Soccer Gala climaxes “Deviza”

The tournament was organized to celebrate the memory of the late Don King Agbana, a sports pundit and promoter

 

A football (Gala) tournament dubbed the “Don King Memorial Gala” was on Monday January 3rd organized by the chiefs and people of Xipe in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta region to climax the community’s annual “Deviza” (Native Festival). The tournament was organized to celebrate the memory of the late Don King Agbana, a sports pundit and promoter and father of Edem Agbana who is a deputy National Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The tournament which was sponsored by Edem Agbana saw ten participating teams drawn from Xipe and neighboring towns and villages. Ehi United FC emerged winners and were presented with a trophy, a set of jerseys a professional football as well as a cash prize of GHC 1000.

Afife Market FC and Lead SC from Tadzewu emerged 1st and 2nd runners up respectively. They each took home a set of jerseys, a football and a cash prize of GHC 800 and GHC 600 respectively. Xipe Away FC took the 4th position and went home with a set of jerseys, a football and GHC 400. Miracle FC from Tsaviefe were adjuged the best behaved team with Afife Market FC claiming the first team to report. They were both presented with a set of jerseys. Each participating team was presented with 200 Cedis and a professional football for appearing.

A former Managing Director of Accra Hearts of Oak and a football business consultant, Neil Armstrong Mortagbe, in a remark to officially open the tournament observed the special role sports plays in uniting people. He encouraged the sportsmen to continue to work hard and maintain discipline at all times. He said as a sports consultant he was committed to helping the youth build lasting careers in football. He observed how persons who have excelled in football brought developmental projects to their communities and urged the youth to work hard and excell in their endeavors in order to also help in bringing development to their communities.
