IMF will only ask us to do what we should have done – Ben Boakye
“I get surprised why sometimes we seem not to know what the IMF does. They are only tell you what you should have done and you didn’t do and ask you to do them now,”
Executive Director of the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) Benjamin Boakye, has said the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is only going to ask Ghana to do what the country should have done but failed to do.
He said he gets surprised when people seem not to know what the IMF does.
“I get surprised why sometimes we seem not to know what the IMF does. They are only tell you what you should have done and you didn’t do and ask you to do them now,”he told Berla Mundi on the New Day show on TV3 Monday July 4.
He further suggested that governments must continue to do self-assessment to find out areas they fall short in order to avoid heading to the IMF for advise.
“I think at every stage, every country has to assess its economy, look at what it can do , what the private sector has to do so that you don’t have government trying to everything and in the name of procurement spend more than they can actually mobilise to end ourselves into a situation we always need an advise from from the IMF,” Mr Boakye stated.
The Akufo-Addo government is heading to the IMF for support.
On Friday July 1 President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo gave instruction to the Finance Minister Mr Ken Ofori-Atta to commence the engagements with the IMF following a telephone conversation between the President and the IMF Managing Director, Miss Kristalina Georgieva, conveying Ghana’s decision to engage with the Fund.
The Ministry of Information announced this in a statement.
