Parliament: Minority Boycotts Sitting, Follows Colleague to Court
At sitting time, not a single member of the Minority was in the chamber.
The Minority Group in Parliament on Thursday, July 6, 2023 boycotted proceedings in Parliament and followed their newly sworn in colleague for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson to court.
Their action was in fulfillment of the proclamation of the Minority Leader, Cassiel Ato Forson that they would follow their colleague to court each time he was due for appearance.
True to this, the group subsequently absented itself from Parliament when the House converged for sitting by 11:30am on Tuesday. Prior to the sitting time, the minority Whip, Ibrahim Ahmed, was seen whipping his colleagues who were entering the chamber to a caucus meeting at Job 600.
According to our information, the Minority wanted to walk their talk hence their action. We gathered that whereas Quayson’s case pending before the High Court was slated for 11:00am that for their Leader, Dr. Ato Forson was slated for 1:00pm that same day.
At sitting time, not a single member of the Minority was in the chamber.
Meanwhile, questions to Ministers in the names of them had been advertised on the Order Paper for the day. Due to their absence, the speaker, the Rt. Hon. A.S.K Bagbin had to order the re-scheduling of these questions in accordance with the Standing Orders of the House.
This notwithstanding, the House still transacted business for the day though the meeting was short-lived
