Samuel Nartey George, the Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram has commended former President John Dramani Mahama for his firm and decisive stance on the issue of homosexuality. Mr George, who is the lead sponsor of the anti-gay bill, praised Mr Mahama’s leadership, noting that the NDC Leader’s public declaration aligns with his own beliefs.
Former President Mahama at a recent public engagement publicly declared his opposition to the promotion of gay activities in Ghana, citing his Christian faith as a member of the Assemblies of God Church.
Addressing a public forum during his ‘Building Ghana Tour’ in Koforidua on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, Mr Mahama reiterated his opposition to LGBTQ activities, emphasizing that his faith does not support same-sex unions.
“My faith as an Assemblies of God member is against LGBTQ. Because the faith I have does not support a man to marry a man and a woman marry a woman,” he indicated.
“I personally believe a man is a man and a woman is a woman. I don’t believe one can get up in a day and opt to change his gender because he feels like, so he’s going to change to become a woman when he has actually been born a man. Nature created us man and woman and God knew what he was doing when he created us like that. So my personal faith is against it,” he noted.
Reacting to this development on his social media handle, the Ningo-Prampram MP said Mahama’s stand on the matter will be remembered positively by posterity.

I have never doubted your position on the matter, especially when you were attacked as President in Scotland in 2016 over your position on homosexuality. Posterity would remember you for good. The Country stands with you on this Sir,” Sam George said.
This comes amidst parliamentary considerations of a Private Members’ motion aimed at legislating against LGBTQ activities and individuals in the country. The proposed legislation, known as the Promotion of Proper Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, has sparked controversy, with critics deeming it draconian.
The bill seeks to criminalize the promotion, advocacy, funding, and acts of homosexuality, prescribing prison terms of up to ten years for LGBTQ+ advocates and three years for individuals identifying as such. Additionally, the legislation aims to withdraw health services from the LGBTQ community, including access to HIV medication.
