A law to regulate Property Rights of Spouses in the offing

The bill which is in its drafting stage is intended to regulate the property rights of spouses

Property Rights of Spouses Bill 2024 is a new bill expected to be presented to Parliament soon kind courtwsy the Member of Parliament for the Techiman North constituency in the Bono East Region, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu Agyare, and the Member of Parliament for the Asokwa constituency in the Ashanti Region Hon. Patricia Appiagyei.

The bill which is in its drafting stage is intended to regulate the property rights of spouses in accordance with article 22 of the constitution, and related matters.

Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu Agyare who addressed the media at a stakeholder holders engagement explained that, the bill when passed would enable spouses to have equal access to property jointly acquired during marriage, and matrimonial property equitably distributed between the spouses should the marriage terminate.

She explained that inherited properties acquired by a spouse is not required to be shared as the law demands therefore that such properties be protected by the law.

The Techiman North legislature said, the law shall also protect housewives who have been married for years to equally get what they deserve.
