Apaak blames teachers’ strike on lack of govt’s proactiveness
“As we speak, close to 7 million students from Kindergarten through primary school to Junior High School to Secondary Schools are currently not benefiting from teaching and learning.
Builsa South Member of Parliament, Dr Clement Apaak has said the government should be blamed for the the strike by teacher unions in the country.
In his view, the government was not proactive in meeting the needs of the teachers to pay their Cost of Living Allowance (COLA).
The leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), and Teachers & Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) have asked their members to withdraw their services beginning today, Monday July 4.
This decision was announced by General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Musah Tanko on Monday July 4.
The unions earlier gave the government by end of June this year to grant the 20 per cent COLA or risk the anger of over 240,000 teachers nationwide.
Addressing a press conference in Parliament on Tuesday July 5, Dr Apaak said “As we speak, close to 7 million students from Kindergarten through primary school to Junior High School to Secondary Schools are currently not benefiting from teaching and learning.
“Clearly, this is as a result of government ‘s inability to meet its obligations that they will be proactive in addressing the needs and demands of the labour unions including teachers.”
