E/R: Abandoned bridge at Akyem Dome fixed after residents threatened to boycott 2024 elections

After threatening to boycott the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, the chief and residents of Akyem Dome in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern region can now boast of a fixed bridge that used to be a death trap.

According to sources, the bridge was awarded on contract two years ago with some drainage systems completed, but contractors later abandoned the project.

The chiefs and residents, who have been frustrated for years over the abandoned bridge and poor road network, threatened to prevent the Electoral Commission (EC) from sending ballot boxes to the town for the 2024 general elections.

According to residents, the bridge that connects to their farms, since it is in a dilapidated state, has affected their farming activities, which are the only source of their livelihoods.

Speaking to the media, the Akyem Dome chief, Barimah Amoako Affum, said the DCE of the Fanteakwa South, Hon. Ernest Ofosu, assured him of getting the bridge fixed within a month, but contractors were only sent to the site two weeks after they threatened to boycott the elections.

Information gathered by newsmen who visited the site reveals that contractors had returned to the site to complete the project.

The chief, however, thanked the media, the DCE, and stakeholders for seeing to the completion of the bridge.
