Ketu South Municipality to Dredge Lagoon to prevent Perennial Flooding

"Soon, we will do a broader consultation with community members for actual work to commence," the MCE emphasized.

The rains are here again and many communities in the Ketu South Municipality are bracing the devastating effects of the floods.

This has made many residents in the Municipality vacate their homes to perch with other family members elsewhere.

Some have abandoned their work places because of the inundating floods.

Major feeder roads are equally flooded with running water and patches of stagnant water.

The high tide of the Keta lagoon has also cut off most of the roads especially the Komla Dumor and Diamond Cement roads which connect several communities to the mainland.

A visit by Ghananewsonline.com.gh to Gaglokope, an island community near the Aflao lagoon saw the community completely submerged in the floods.

The lagoon has flooded the community, submerging it in the process and making it very difficult for school children who reside there to cross to school especially at this time that most of the schools are writing their end of term examinations.

Speaking on the plans to prevent further flooding in the communities, the Municipal Chief Executive for Ketu South, Maxwell Kofi Lugudor said, the Assembly has begun processes to dredge the lagoon to accommodate the rising waters.

The MCE indicated that the Assembly has done consultations with the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, which has sent a technical team for an assessment and has recommended the urgent need for the dredging.

He said the Assembly has secured a report from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and all documents to back the dredging of the lagoon.

“Soon, we will do a broader consultation with community members for actual work to commence,” the MCE emphasized.

Lugudor called on all residents of the Municipality to cooperate with the authorities when the actual work begins as that is the only way to prevent further flooding and safeguard the area from the effects of the floods.
