Live telecast of court proceedings will consolidate democratic gains – Inusah Fuseini

Legal Practitioner and former Minister of Roads and Highways, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini, has given his support to the call by the Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame to have cases of national interest in court telecast live.
The former lawmaker for Tamale Central stated that allowing for cases of national interest in court to be shown live on television will help Ghana to consolidate her democratic gains since democracy thrives on transparency and accountability.
He explained to Alfred Ocansey on the 3FM Sunrise morning Show on Friday April 222 that it will make people develop confidence in the judicial system since they are able to see the demeanor of parties in the litigation and from the lay man’s view, judge for themselves if one is lying or not.

We can’t take out the fact that people feel part of the whole process though their opinions do not count in the courts judgement,” he said.
He however indicated that there is a cost element to the live telecasting of court cases that are of national interest, therefore important consideration must be given to the source of funding.
“Democracy comes with a cost and we should ask ourselves how we are going to fund it. If we all agree that such cases of important national interests that are in court must be shown live on television, then we should all be willing to bear the cost.” Inusah Fuseini advised.
Mr Godfred Dame on Thursday April 21 called on the Judiciary to allow for live telecast of all cases of national interest just like election petitions. He is of the view that this will afford the citizens the chance to weigh the arguments made by the legal practitioners and appreciate the reason behind certain judgements by the court.
Godfred Dame made this appeal at the opening of the 2022 Bench, Bar and Faculty Conference on Thursday.
