Mepe: Social Activism for Women donates to Victims of the Akosombo Dam Spillage
Social Activism For Women’s Support for the victims was driven by the understanding that women and children are particularly vulnerable to such devastating floods, which disrupt the educational process of school children.
The Social Activism for Women (SAW) – a group of renowned media personalities dedicated to advocating for the vulnerable in society, particularly women and children, has shown compassion by donating various relief items to victims of the Akosombo dam spillage at Mepe in the Volta Region.
In an interview after the donation exercise, a prominent member of group, Afia Kwarteng Asamani, noted that SAW had collected items such as clothing for women and men, diapers, and more.
“These donations came from generous Ghanaians who were moved by the group’s social media campaign,” she stated.
Member of Parliament for the North Tongu constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who received the items on behalf of his constituents, used the occasion to call on the government and the Volta River Authority (VRA) to swiftly address the Akosombo Flood victims’ situation. He emphasized that the disaster was a consequence of actions by the VRA and therefore “I urge the government to incorporate compensation plans in the upcoming budget to be presented in parliament”.
Another prominent member of SAW, Nana Adwoa Owusu, lamented the impact of the disaster on the education of students in the constituency. She said “swift action must be taken to ensure the well-being of the affected students”.
Adding their voices, Lily Afia Oforiwaah Ofori and Yaba Sarfo, also prominent members of the group noted that “SAW remains committed to assisting women and children facing challenges”.
