We’ll not tolerate tribal hatred directed to any Northerner – Atubiga
“This is highly unacceptable, disrespectful to all Northerners”, he stressed. He is therefore urging all political actors to desist from such comments as we approach elections.
The founder and leader of National Liberation Congress (NLC), Mr. Stephen Atubiga has emphatically stated that his party and fellow northerners will resist any individual who will make any derogatory comments against any northerner in the name of politics.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on February 14, 2024, Mr. Atubiga said any attempt by persons to talk negatively against northerners in politics, especially the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Candidate, Mr. John Dramani Mahama or the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia will be met with strong opposition.
According to him, this is aimed at protecting the images of the two front runners of the NDC and the NPP parties in the upcoming 2024 general elections and also guard against insulting northerners which was the order of the day in the past.
“Let’s note that apart from the fact that northerners were used, by a non-northerner to overthrow Dr. Limamn government, northerners were also used to destroy each other which crashed John Dramani Mahama ability to hold unto power in 2016”.
He stated that it is indeed good that the presidential candidates of the two main parties this time round are both Northerners adding that, it is important for them to avoid undermining their own and never allow any non-Northerner insult their own more especially on their soil and go unpunished.
“| don’t think any Northerner could insult any Ewe politician in the Volta, same manner the General Secretary of NDC, Mr. Fifi Kwetey insulted Dr. Bawumia in the North and went unpunished. If we don’t wake up now and fight against any conspiracy seeking to conspicuously run down Dr. Bawumia with hatred and widely spread disinformation, a bad tag on Dr. Bawumia’s achievements, failures or fallout will reflect on every northerner’s future in political history just like in the days of Dr. Limamn and JDM”.
Mr. Atubiga made this statement in response to comments made by the General Secretary of the NDC, Mr. Fifi Kwetey.
According to him, Fifi Kwetey’s statement suggesting that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is a disgrace to the history of any Northerner that ever existed was uncalled for.
