Mines and Energy committee to hold a stakeholder meeting over Tamale power thefts

The Member of Parliament for Bongo Constituency in the Upper East Region says it will be in the interest of the people of Tamale to stop power thefts and attacks on workers because they [residents] cannot use electricity and refuse to pay.

A member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Mines and Energy, Edward Bawa, has hinted that the Committee is planning a stakeholder meeting in the Tamale Metropolis over the attacks on workers of Northern Electricity Department (NEDCo) of the Volta River Authority (VRA) and also the never-ending stealing of electricity.

The Member of Parliament for Bongo Constituency in the Upper East Region says it will be in the interest of the people of Tamale to stop power thefts and attacks on workers because they [residents] cannot use electricity and refuse to pay.

NEDCo loses GH¢ 9 million a month to power theft in Tamale metropolis alone.

Apart from this, there have been constant attacks on workers of NEDCo anytime they make attempts to collect electricity tariffs and also install meters for the residents.

Reacting to the development on 3FM’s Sunrise hosted by Alfred Ocansey on Monday, Mr. Bawa said “we intend holding a stakeholder meetings in Tamale.

“We shall bring all the chiefs and the people together to tell them the need to get these things solved because it is for their own survival”.

Mr. Bawa noted that “there has been a political expediency involved in these power thefts. If you are the CEO and the appointing President says don’t do this, you cannot do that”.

He added “NEDCO covers 64% of the landmarks of Ghana comprising Ashanti Region, Bono, the whole of northern regions and Tamale metropolis area has the highest consumption of power and this is where illegal power connection is high”.
